Raquel Fraga-Encinas is a Spanish born astrophysicist who fell in love with the night-sky at an early age. She did her Bachelor’s degree in Astrophysics at the University of New Mexico in the USA and proceeded to get a Master’s in Astronomy at the University of Maryland. After working in Spain several years as support scientist for ESA’s Athena X-ray observatory, she decided to carry out her PhD research at Radboud University in Nijmegen. She is part of the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration and she investigates the properties of Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of our own galaxy, which is the other main scientific target of the Event Horizon Telescope along with M87.

The lecture will begin with an overview of the history of black holes, what we know about their physics via theory and observations. Then Raquel will introduce the topic of interferometry and how observations are made with radio telescopes. In addition, she will tell us about the Event Horizon Telescope, a world-wide network of radio telescopes that has taken – for the first time ever – a picture of a black hole. The lecture will cover the process for obtaining this amazing image, its challenges, and what we can learn about this supermassive black hole in heart of M87.
